As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vines
I was passing by yon cool and crystal fountain
Someone hit me from behind

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through this weary world of woe
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
No one on earth would ever know

They say prayer has the power to help
So pray for me mother
In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell
I'm trying to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh, mother, things ain't going well

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
They'll be no mercy for you once you've lost

Now I'm all worn down by weepin'
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleepin'
I'll just slaughter them where they lie

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through the world mysterious and vague
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walking through the cities of the plague

The whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Eatin' hog-eyed grease in hog-eyed town
Heart burnin' – still yearnin'
Someday you'll be glad to have me around

They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack
I'll make the most of one last extra hour
I'll avenge my father's death then I'll step back

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Hand me down my walkin' cane
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Got to get you out of my miserable brain

All my loyal and much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
My mule is sick, my horse is blind
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Thinkin' ‘bout that gal I left behind

It's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flying
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire's gone out but the light is never dying
Who says I can't get heavenly aid?

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Carrying a dead man's shield
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' with a toothache in my heel

The suffering is unending
Every nook and cranny has it's tears
I'm not playing, I'm not pretending
I'm not nursing any superfluous fears

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Walkin' ever since the other night
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' ‘til I'm clean out of sight

As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, hot summer lawn
Excuse me, ma'am I beg your pardon
There's no one here, the gardener is gone

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Up the road around the bend
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
In the last outback, at the world's end

Ain't Talkin'

Ok, so why a song saying he Ain't Talkin'? But he is singing it, and in not a few songs. Is singing' ok with you, for a singer? The rest of us can talk. But even then, can you tell me one average Christian who talks about The Way nearly as much as he could? What's wrong with us? How much of your time, if you are a Christian, is really spent concentrating on and following through with the teachings of Jesus? I mean all of them? And then how much of the time do you spend on your own agenda of getting ahead, making sure that money will be there, you are acceptable to others regardless if they know you are a Christian?

Not long after Bob's gospel albums in the early 80s he said how he wanted to communicate his faith in a more subtle or poetic way. This way those truly seeking The Truth and have ears to hear can pick up on the messages and be encouraged; and those who aren't seekers of The Truth, at least not yet, can have enough of a challenge to do so as they hear songs "speaking" to the reality of the human condition; the sinful human condition and how Bob has responded to it. All this coming from an artistic legend in the music world known for his covert way of doing things.

Anyway, I digress. Here's an interpretation of the song:

When you are about to bear fruit, you can get hurt. Even when you are enjoying living water, you can be attacked. It is a spiritual battle, indeed. For those ready to slam the use of the word mystic, understand that mystic does have the meaning of someone who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect. If God says "My thoughts are higher than your thoughts," (and He does), wouldn't you like to "know" His peace that passes mind? God offers that, too.

2 We live in a world under judgment and the solution is rejected. We who have the fire of the Spirit in our hearts often seem to struggle alone, but we are not alone.
See below - Matthew 18, Luke 6

3 Pray for me mother, he sings. One of the biggest needs in our society is the stability of the family. The fathers are usually out working. Mothers are known for their more nurturing tendencies and in these wicked times, they really need to pray.

Our battle is also against evil spirits, not the cartoonish wispy kind, but the clever sort. We can do the things we don't want, and we can not do the things we know we should. So we need to pray, and we need prayer.
See below - Romans 7, Ephesians 6

4 But from the perspective of grace and forgiveness, we can forgive and forget. When we who believe know the grace given to us in Christ, we perceive the destiny of those who practice wrongs against us. So we must show them mercy and pray they don't arrive at the place of no mercy when the demarcation of death has been crossed and they are lost, permanently and forever.
See below - Matthew 5

5 Experience may bring weeping where no mercy was extended. But remember that judgment will be merciless to those who have shown no mercy.
See below - James 2

6 But while we travel on in this world with no immediate answers, the truth warms our hearts in the midst of a shimmering world sick with sin and wrong.
See below - Isaiah 53

7 We can be tempted to toy with theories and speculations about our origins or the age or substance of the universe, but they just want to rob you of any truth they have not discovered and gather you to themselves so they can boast in your presence with their emptiness, too! You know, comfort in numbers; and misery loves company. However, if you enter a state of humility perhaps leading to the Light, watch out!
See below - Colossians 2

8 And then there are those who want to be glad you joined their legalistic self-righteous religious stance. But in the Truth that sets free (namely, Jesus) you can consume any liberated enlightened thing you want! You don't have to call anything unclean that God has cleansed through the blood and death of his very own precious Son. This reality burns in the hearts of truth lovers who know that one day some truth rejectors will have turned around and will then enjoy your company.
See below - Acts 10

9 Also, watch out for money-lovers who insist money brings happiness. They can drive you crazy if you are not careful!
See below - I Timothy 6

10 But you just keep that hourly walk in truth and justice and let God have his way. In your weakness rely on God in this walk and take every thought and make it captive to obey Jesus Christ.
See below - II Corinthians 10

11 Yes, he still practices his faith. It is a faith many have rejected but he has not. Hear how he sings "abandoned." There is no need for religious altars in his faith because they were replaced by The Altar of Sacrifice, the cross. Neither is there need for religious institutions. This runs contrary to many, which can make the road of faith seem long and lonely in these modern times.
See below - Hebrews 9 and 10

12 Even when your resources are limited to the extreme, the warmth of light and truth and grace keep you going.
See below - II Corinthians 12

13 Don't forget about things above where God is, where power and awe and brilliance exceeds anything of seemingly endless recognition this dying world purports to offer. Seek the honor that comes from God and goes to him. And don't go by your feelings, knowing the light of God's truth within will never leave and he is faithful to keep his promises. His grace and help is always available. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
See below - Ezekiel 1 and 10

14 So take up his cause, that cross, his emblem, that spiritual protection as you walk; and sense the price and the sacrifice he made for you.
See below - Genesis 3, I Corinthians 1

15 Now a more sobering moment. Don't forget the reality of hell for those who die without Christ. God describes hell as a place of perpetual burning, a place where the worm never dies and the fire is not quenched, a place of utter darkness in the outer realms, a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth. They still believe God is being unjust. They never did embrace Christ crucified and risen from the grave for them. So there is no other place for them. They rejected the gift of forgiveness purchased on that cross. There will be no recess or cave where eternal weeping ceases. Now don't get me wrong. This is no religious game. This song is not a make-believe allegory at this point. This fear for the lost is necessary. How else will they hear before they are lost forever?
See below - Matthew 13

16 So, I'll keep singin' this song and walkin' this message, the same message I received a while back. This burning truth in my soul will keep me on this path right up until the end of my days on earth when the people of this world can see me no more.
See below - Colossians 2

17 Some have mistaken the object of his faith, like seeing one person when it was someone else.
See below - John 20

18 My eyes are on the Trailblazer of my faith, Jesus, down every twist and turn on the pathway of life ahead while in this world for such a short time longer. When I come to the end of this road, like at the very end of the song, well, as it is written and as the chord suddenly changes, it is "to be away from the body and at home with the Lord."

The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the wild beasts and all the living creatures of the field! On your belly you will crawl and dust you will eat all the days of your life. And I will put hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; her offspring will attack your head, and you will attack her offspring’s heel.”

Genesis 3:14-15

As I watched, I noticed a windstorm coming from the north – an enormous cloud, with
lightning flashing, such that bright light rimmed it and came from it like glowing amber from the middle of a fire.

The appearance of the wheels and their construction was like gleaming jasper, and all four wheels looked alike. Their structure was like a wheel within a wheel. When they moved they would go in any of the four directions they faced without turning as they moved. Their rims were high and awesome, and the rims of all four wheels were full of eyes all around.

Ezekiel 1:4, 16-18

As I watched,
I noticed four wheels by the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; the wheels gleamed like jasper. As for their appearance, all four of them looked the same, something like a wheel within a wheel. When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions they faced without turning as they moved; in the direction the head would turn they would follow without turning as they moved, along with their entire bodies, their backs, their hands, and their wings. The wheels of the four of them were full of eyes all around. As for their wheels, they were called “the wheelwork” as I listened.

Ezekiel 10:9-13

But he lifted up
our illnesses, he carried our pain; even though we thought he was being punished, attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds we have been healed. All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him.

Isaiah 53:4-6

“Blessed are
the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me. Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way."

Matthew 5:7, 9-12

The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather from his kingdom everything that causes sin as well as all lawbreakers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears had better listen!

Matthew 13:41-43

Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks! It is necessary that stumbling blocks come, but woe to the person through whom they come."

Matthew 18:7

“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already. Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets. But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you."

Luke 6:24-28

Jesus replied,
“Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-15

On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says,
From within him will flow rivers of living water.’” (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 7:37-39

And she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’ body had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” Mary replied, “They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him!” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” Because
she thought he was the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.”

John 20:12-15

He saw heaven opened and an object something like a large sheet descending, being let down to earth by its four corners. In it were
all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth and wild birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; slaughter and eat!” But Peter said, “Certainly not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled and ritually unclean!” The voice spoke to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean!”

Acts 10:11-15

For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want – instead, I do what I hate. But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good. But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me. So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God in my inner being. But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 7:15-25

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

I Corinthians 1:18

Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth we are absent from the Lord –
for we live by faith, not by sight. Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil. Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people, but we are well known to God, and I hope we are well known to your consciences too.

Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His plea through us.
We plead with you on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God!”

II Corinthians 5:6-11, 20

For though we live as human beings, we do not wage war according to human standards, for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and
we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ.

II Corinthians 10:3-5

But he said to me, “My grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” So then, I will boast most gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may reside in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with troubles, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

II Corinthians 12:9-10

the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand.

Ephesians 6:10-13

Therefore, just
as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you through an empty, deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form.

Colossians 2:6-9

For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

I Timothy 6:10

But now Christ has come as the high priest of the good things to come.
He passed through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with hands – the representation of the true sanctuary – but into heaven itself, and he appears now in God’s presence for us. And he did not enter to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own, for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the consummation of the ages to put away sin by his sacrifice. And just as people are appointed to die once, and then to face judgment, so also, after Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many, to those who eagerly await him he will appear a second time, not to bear sin but to bring salvation.

Hebrews 9:11, 24-28

By his will we have been made holy through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands day after day serving and offering the same sacrifices again and again – sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, he sat down at the right hand of God.

Hebrews 10:10-12

For judgment is merciless for the one who has shown no mercy. But mercy triumphs over judgment.

James 2:13
