We live in a political world
Love don't have any place
We're living in times where men commit crimes
And crime don't have a face

We live in a political world
Icicles hanging down
Wedding bells ring and angels sing
Clouds cover up the ground

We live in a political world
Where mercy walks the plank
Life is in mirrors, death disappears
Up the steps into the nearest bank

We live in a political world
Where courage is a thing of the past
Houses are haunted, children are unwanted
The next day could be your last

We live in a political world
The one we can see and can feel
But there's no one to check, it's all a stacked deck
We all know for sure that it's real

We live in a political world
Under the microscope
You can travel anywhere and hang yourself there
You always got more than enough rope

We live in a political world
Turning and a-thrashing about
As soon as you're awake, you're trained to take
What looks like the easy way out

We live in a political world
Where peace is not welcome at all
It's turned away from the door to wander some more
Or put up against the wall

We live in a political world
Everything is hers or his
Climb into the frame and shout God's name
But you're never sure what it is

Political World

Self-righteousness. That's what politics is about. It does not exalt or make its boast in the Lord. Its boast is always in the people and their leadership. Some might say it has to be this way until God's kingdom comes to earth. But citizens of the Kingdom will want to see it differently.

People of the Kingdom of heaven are called to be lights and salt of the earth. There is no way they cannot have an impact on the way things are. Children of God do not have to embrace the status quo. After all, the status quo is not good for anyone so why would we want it to stay the same?

Consider what the song says. Sacrificial love is acted out in hypocrisy. Behind the scenes and the cameras people are cold toward those not their own. Mercy has no true decision-making role in how the money is acquired from others who fall on hard times. Not really. To risk one's life for others is non-existent unless it gives you a good showing. People fear so much to the point they kill and neglect children, in or out of the womb. Their fears create abject selfishness to the denial they could be next in line to die any day now. What can be seen and felt experientially becomes the end all and do all to life's direction which is really death's direction and there is no accountability, so they think, but it will come. You can cave in to intense scrutiny by the peer people who only want to drain the life out of you for their own political or selfish purposes no matter where you go. People will burn themselves out to take the easy way out. The only way to ultimate and lasting peace is rejected or persecuted. Men and women still fight each other deep within, trying to do one over on each other before the audience, even at times in the name of religion, but you have to wonder what god they really follow.

So, perhaps now we know politics a little better. All these elements, and others, can be seen without looking too hard; unless you've been caught up in them . . . too.

Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone."

Luke 18:19

What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin, just as it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one, there is no one who understands, there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, not even one. Their throats are open graves, they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood, ruin and misery are in their paths, and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes." Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be help accountable to God. For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed - namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Romans 3:9-24
