1It's been such a long, long time
Since we loved each other and our hearts were true
One time, for one brief day,
I was the man for you

2Last night I heard you talking in your sleep
Saying things you shouldn't say
Oh, baby,
you just might have to go to jail someday

3Is there a place we can go?
Is there anybody we can see?
Maybe it's the same for you
as it is for me

4I ain't seen my family in twenty years
That ain't easy to understand
They may be dead by now
I lost track of them after they lost their land

5Shake it up baby, twist and shout
You know what it's all about
What you doing out there in the sun anyway?
Don't you know the sun can burn your brains right out?

6My enemy crashed into the dust
Stopped dead in his tracks and he lost his lust
He was run down hard and he broke apart
He died in shame, he had an iron heart

7I wear dark glasses to cover my eyes
There's secrets in them that I can't disguise
Come back, baby, if I hurt your feelings,
I apologize

8Two trains running side by side
Forty miles wide, down the Eastern line
You don't have to go,
I just came to you because you're a friend of mine

9I think that when my back was turned
The whole world behind me burned
It's been a while
since we walked down that long, long aisle

10We cried on a cold and frosty morn'
We cried because our souls were torn
So much for tears,
so much for these long and wasted years

Long And Wasted Years

Here's a song with splits and curves taking you who knows where. One thing is certain, stuff grows over what were the most pristine times. It's like moss. It's like rust. Those events crumple under the weight of time and some sort of futility. It's as though even sink holes appear and swallow up the most dear memories. Paths we took are no more. Any so-called refreshing from this polluted world has vaporized, out of reach and out of range, off the scope.

1This picture can include lost relationships. Relying on initial impressions provides no solid footing, and yet people go there all the time. Then the ground turns to sinking sand and what's left over is cluelessness, not to mention those tears.

2Somehow, in some tendency, relationships that begin that way reveal their skeletons and secrets in the most unlikely places and the most unlikeliest of times. Consequences can be devastating.

3So, the questions are asked. Is there someone we can rely on besides ourselves? Maybe you've asked those questions, too. Maybe you've found a Person like a solid rock for the relationship, too. Maybe you can find the one who reveals how you can love because He first loved you, too.

4When there is no lasting love in relationships, even those closest at one time end up distant on many levels. Not only is love lost but so is sense. You can reach out to them but there's no response. Even when they could use your help, they still stay away. People can be crazy and times are strange, but when you're locked tight in the love of God their refusal does not reach to you or separate you from His love. You cared, you showed concern, you felt the hurt, but you understand now and where it may have brought you down before, well, things have changed.

5The songs you knew, the trends you followed, have lost their luster and you are no longer hip, cool, with it, astute, higher than most (you thought). The things you followed and the places you were told to go can burn you out or just plain burn you. So, who to rely on who has proven Himself trustworthy and faithful? Who can bring you meaning and purpose in life where you won't sink or get burned? His name is Jesus. I know, some will get bent out of shape and lose their cool at that belief, but Jesus is the Truth that brings a satisfied mind.

6Now we don't want to speculate too much as to the enemy here. We do know he lost. He couldn't work it out. He flew high and crashed being stopped dead where he was walking and it ended his life of self-exaltation with the over indulgence that came with it. He and his acclaim being lost so suddenly was stunning. He broke and died without acknowledging the Truth which made the most important ashamed of him. Where else would shame come from than from another? His fate was like this due to a hardened heart.

7Next stop could be Washington, DC. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was given. Bob did what he wanted to do. Was he not free to? He wore dark glasses to avoid some kind of eye contact. Was it the lighting? Was it not wanting the pupils to land where one could misunderstand in such a gathering as that? At such an important event and nobel conclave, some may have been offended at his "liberal" persona, and perhaps Bob is expressing his sensitivities on that with the apology.

8Bob was asked about certain lyrics one time and politely let the interviewer know that what he writes was personal. Again, as is often the case with Bob, it seems to come out of nowhere, but we know it's out of somewhere even if it seems out of context. He speaks of two trains. We know he has written about a slow train earlier and a fast train in Duquesne Whistle. I don't think these are the two trains he has in mind. We could begin with the place of the dark glasses and move up from there. The trains are side by side, which makes them rather close as in the Currier and Ives painting The "Lightning Express" Trains. (You can view it on this site's page for Gotta Serve Somebody.) But then both trains are running on the East Coast. Then you have this forty miles distance between the two. From Baltimore's inner harbor to Washington, DC, there is a distance of forty miles. I could be stuck in the middle on this one. I think I'll stay here and keep on keepin' on and try not to extrapolate more than I can or should or is necessary. We can be thankful for the reassurance that comes with friendship, like he put it. I'm really encouraged that he said that.

9A wedding aisle? A church aisle? Some other kind of aisle? A clue may be found in turning his back in such a way that the whole world was lost to him. He is talking to someone who is right there with him and who had walked down that aisle with him some time ago. Marriage is not so profound that you consider the whole world as having burned behind you. But when you come into a relationship with Someone who is not of this world, you know the commitment is as certain and as serious as a steady walk against the grain of the universe. When the decision is made for Christ you know this world is not your home. All its bridges and anything else this world offers, you gladly and entirely consider as all burned up.

10Crying together on a cold morning as opposed to a warmer morning would seem like the experience when something had torn their souls. Notice he does not say their souls were torn apart. Just torn. The "so much for" part at the end seems to indicate that even many tears over many years of selfish living don't have to weigh so heavily any more. At least not if you consider the whole world and its ways as was explained from the previous verse. A whole new life continues. A life that last's eternally from the One who said that His Kingdom was not of this world. So much of nothing then for the shallowness and the coldness and the tears and the long and wasted years of this very temporary world and its lying ways.

1Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it had been founded on rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!

Matthew 7:24-27

2The human mind is more deceitful than anything else.
It is incurably bad. Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:9

2But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person.

Matthew 15:18-20

3Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.

Matthew 11:28-30

3Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 14:6

3We love because he loved us first.

I John 4:19

4For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

Luke 19:10

4If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:32-36

5Sometimes I think, “I will make no mention of his message. I will not speak as his messenger any more.” But then his message becomes like a fire locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul. I grow weary of trying to hold it in; I cannot contain it.

Jeremiah 20:9

5The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

John 10:10

5Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions) is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.

I John 2:15-17

6Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him, so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, “Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them.

John 12:37-40

7The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Matthew 6:22-23

8You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything I heard from my Father.

John 15:14-15

9I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to the world just as I do not belong to the world. Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth. Just as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I set myself apart on their behalf, so that they too may be truly set apart.

John 17:14-19

9But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Galatians 6:14

9If you have died with Christ to the elemental spirits of the world, why do you submit to them as though you lived in the world? “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!” These are all destined to perish with use, founded as they are on human commands and teachings. Even though they have the appearance of wisdom with their self-imposed worship and false humility achieved by an unsparing treatment of the body – a wisdom with no true value – they in reality result in fleshly indulgence.

Colossians 2:20-23

9Do not love the world or the things in the world.

9You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them. We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.

I John 4:4-6

10The days of our lives add up to seventy years, or eighty, if one is especially strong. But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression. Yes, they pass quickly and we fly away.

So teach us to consider our mortality,
so that we might live wisely.

Psalm 90:10, 12

10For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death. For see what this very thing, this sadness as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what punishment! In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

II Corinthians 7:10-11
